What Is a PSA 10? What the Grade Means and Why It Matters
A PSA 10, called Gem Mint, is the highest standard grade from PSA, the largest card grading company. It means the card is virtually flawless: sharp corners, clean edges, a clean surface, and near-perfect centering. Because so few cards reach it, a PSA 10 can be worth several times the same card graded PSA 9.
What the number means
PSA grades cards on a 1 to 10 scale. A 10 is Gem Mint, a 9 is Mint, and so on down. The grade is a single number that sums up centering, corners, edges, and surface. Each step down the scale usually means a meaningful drop in value, and the gap between a 9 and a 10 is often the largest of all.
Why a 10 is so much more valuable
Two reasons. First, scarcity: very few copies of any card earn a 10, so the supply of perfect examples is small. Second, trust: a sealed, labeled PSA case lets a buyer pay confidently without inspecting the card themselves. Scarcity plus trust is what drives the premium.
PSA 10 versus a Black Label
A standard PSA 10 allows tiny imperfections within the Gem Mint standard. The far rarer Black Label, given by BGS rather than PSA, requires a perfect 10 on all four subgrades at once. They are different companies and different standards, so do not assume the labels are interchangeable.
Is chasing a 10 worth it
For a valuable card in strong condition, the jump to a 10 can pay for the grading fee many times over. For a common card, it almost never does. The honest move is to estimate the card's value at a 9 and at a 10 before you submit, and only grade when the math works.
Where The Hoard fits
The Hoard does not grade cards and is not a grader. It is where your graded cards live afterward as a clean record: the grade, the cert number, your photos, and what you paid, all attached to the right card and under your control. Market Guard then watches for unusual price movement on graded cards like yours.
Frequently asked
Is a PSA 10 always better than a PSA 9?
In value, almost always yes, often by a wide margin. In practice, a strong PSA 9 of a rare card can still be very valuable.
Can a PSA 10 have any flaws?
A standard PSA 10 allows very minor imperfections within the Gem Mint standard. A perfect card across all four subgrades is the BGS Black Label, which is rarer.
How long does PSA grading take?
It varies with the service level you pay for and PSA's current backlog, so check their site before you submit.
