HOARD VS HODINKEE · COMPARISON
A SHOP CAN
CLOSE. A RECORD
DOES NOT.
Hodinkee returned to content and exited e-commerce in 2024, and Crown and Caliber went to another owner. Here is what that changed for watch collectors, and what a record layer does that a shop cannot.

PUBLISHED, COLLECTOR TO COLLECTORConsignment rates are negotiated rather than published. You cannot compare a rate you were never shown.
If you searched this, you probably already know the shape of it. Hodinkee bought Crown and Caliber in 2021, ran it through a market that turned, and in July 2024 announced a return to its roots as a content business, stepping back from most retail. Crown and Caliber’s digital assets went to European Watch Company that October, without the inventory, and the remaining shop stock went elsewhere. Watches of Switzerland Group acquired Hodinkee itself on 3 October 2024, keeping the insurance business, and Hodinkee traffic now points at the Watches of Switzerland US site.
None of that is a knock on Hodinkee. The writing was and is the best in the category, the insurance business underwrites serious money, and returning to what you are actually best at is a good decision, not a failure.
But it is a useful lesson about where you keep things. The buying and selling surface a lot of collectors used is not there in the form it was. If the only place your watch’s history lived was a shop’s account page, that history moved when the shop did, or it did not move at all. That is the specific problem The Hoard exists to solve, and it is why this comparison is not really about which one to buy from.
SIDE BY SIDE
HOW THE TWO ARE STRUCTURED.
What it is now
HODINKEE
Watch media, limited editions, and insurance, under Watches of Switzerland Group since October 2024.
THE HOARD
An all encompassing fan network. A social market covering watches alongside everything else you follow, with a permanent record under it.
Buying and selling
HODINKEE
Most retail operations were wound down from 2024. Crown and Caliber, the pre owned arm, is under separate ownership.
THE HOARD
Collector to collector and vendor to collector, non custodial, at a published 1.5% or 5% facilitation fee.
Who holds your watch
HODINKEE
A consignment or trade in model means the watch goes to the company.
THE HOARD
You. Always. The Hoard never takes possession.
Cost
HODINKEE
Consignment and trade in spreads rather than a published flat rate.
THE HOARD
Free profile for collectors and dealers alike. Facilitation fee of 1.5% collector to collector or 5% commercial. Collector Pro and the vendor tiers are upgrades, not entry.
Insurance
HODINKEE
A real product and a serious strength of the business.
THE HOARD
Not an insurer. The record is built to be exported as evidence for whoever does insure you.
Coverage
HODINKEE
Watches.
THE HOARD
Watches alongside sports, fashion, plants, and everything else you follow.
What survives a corporate change
HODINKEE
Whatever the acquirer chooses to keep.
THE HOARD
Your record, because it is yours and it is exportable.
BOTH SIDES, HONESTLY
BOTH PANELS ARE REAL.
WHERE HODINKEE WINS
The writing. Nothing in the category comes close, and The Hoard is not attempting it.
Insurance. A specialist watch insurance product built by people who understand the objects. That is a real service and a real strength.
Limited editions. Collaborations you cannot get anywhere else.
Authority. A Hodinkee byline still moves the market in a way no platform’s listing page does.
Curation. An edited point of view is worth more than an infinite feed for a lot of collectors.
WHERE THE HOARD WINS
Your watch stays with you. No consignment, no shipping it off, no waiting for a sale you cannot see.
A published number instead of a negotiated spread. On a watch the percentage is the largest single cost in the transaction. 1.5% collector to collector, on a profile that costs nothing to open, is a figure you can check before you decide.
A record that survives. Service history, box and papers, purchase documentation, ownership chain. Exportable, portable, yours.
Everything in one place. The watches next to the cards next to the vinyl next to whatever else you follow.
Collection to convention. Waves covers the shows. Turn up, check in, and a numbered coin is minted to you for being there. Attending costs nothing, the host carries the pass.
Nothing depends on us staying open. The export is the guarantee. If The Hoard disappeared tomorrow the record still leaves with you.
No house and no narrative. No inventory position, no editorial line on what is worth owning. The network is whatever the people on it make of it.

FOUR SCENARIOS, IN DOLLARS.

The spread is illustrative, because consignment rates are negotiated rather than published.

You cannot compare a rate you were never shown, which is itself the point. A published 1.5% is a number you can put next to whatever you are offered.
TWO, THE COLLECTION YOU INSURE
Nine watches, and an insurer who wants documentation.
This is where the two fit together rather than compete. The Hoard produces the export: photographs, serials, purchase documentation, service history, current valuations, in one file. Hodinkee’s insurance arm, or whoever underwrites you, receives a package instead of a shoebox of receipts. One is the record, the other is the policy.
THREE, THE WATCH THAT HAS BEEN IN THE FAMILY
A grandfather’s watch, no box, no papers, and a story nobody has written down.
No shop has a product for this, because you are not selling it. What it needs is a record: photographs, whatever documentation exists, the service history from here forward, and the story attached to the object rather than living in one person’s memory.
When it passes to the next person, the record passes with it. That is Personal Legacy, one time.
FOUR, THE DEALER
Forty pieces of inventory, a real book of clients, and no interest in giving up either.

Client relationshipsyours
A consignment relationship takes a double digit percentage and stands between you and the buyer. This takes 5%, costs nothing to open, and stands out of the way, and the client stays yours. For a dealer with an existing book, the difference between five percent and a negotiated fifteen compounds every single month.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
8 QUESTIONS.
01
Can I still buy and sell watches on Hodinkee?
Hodinkee announced in July 2024 that it was returning to its roots as a news and information site and ceasing most retail activity. Crown and Caliber, its pre owned arm, was sold to European Watch Company that October without inventory, and Hodinkee itself was acquired by Watches of Switzerland Group on 3 October 2024. Check the current sites directly, since the picture has continued to move.
02
Where do watch collectors sell now?
The options are dealer consignment, the large pre owned marketplaces, auction, or direct collector to collector. The Hoard serves the last of those, without taking custody, at a published 1.5% collector to collector or 5% commercial.
03
Does The Hoard authenticate watches?
No. It records what is documented about a watch, on a ladder from Draft to Basic to Documented to Export Ready, and never makes a claim about the piece itself.
04
What is record quality?
A ladder describing how thoroughly an item is documented, from Draft up to Export Ready. It is a statement about the strength of the record, not a grade, an appraisal, or a claim about the piece.
05
What happens to my record if The Hoard shuts down?
You export it. The record is designed to be portable and to leave with you, which is exactly the failure mode this article is about.
06
Does The Hoard replace watch insurance?
No. It produces the documentation an insurer asks for. The policy comes from an insurer.
07
Can I keep watches and other categories together?
Yes. One account covers every category, which is the practical difference between a collection tool and a category shop.
08
What does it cost to sell a watch on The Hoard?
1.5% of the item if you are a collector selling to a collector, or 5% if you hold any commercial role, plus 2% of shipping when shipping is charged. That is the whole facilitation fee. Stripe’s processing rate is separate and is paid by you directly to Stripe. There is no negotiated spread on top.
THE SHORT VERSION
A shop is a place to transact and it can be sold, wound down, or pointed somewhere else, and every one of those things happened here. A record is a thing you own. Read Hodinkee, insure with people who understand watches, and keep the record somewhere that leaves with you.
